Stage IV Ology Project

The most recent Stage IV humanities unit was an exciting research endeavor called "The Ology Project." This unit was inspired by the popular and informative book series which includes topics such as Dragonology, Monsterology, Pirateology, and Egyptology. For more information on the Ology books, check out www.ologyworld.com.

Stage IV students chose a topic of interest, conducted research, and chose a method for sharing their information and new knowledge. Some students selected typing a paper, creating a poster, building a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, or designing a glog. A glog?! Yes, a glog. It's like a blog...only cooler. To learn more about The Ology Project, check out the glogs created by some of the Stage IV students by clicking the links in the menu on the right!

Keep a Poem in Your Pocket

"Poem in Your Pocket" Day is Friday, April 30, 2010. Inspired by the poem "Keep a Poem in Your Pocket" by renowned children's author, Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, this celebration of poetry has occurred since 2002.

The Library Media Center has been brimming with poetry this week as students have been listening to, reading, writing and selecting poems to keep in their pockets for this school-wide tradition. On Friday homerooms will meet with their buddies to share and celebrate poetry!

Keep A Poem In Your Pocket
By Beatrice Schenk de Regniers

Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.

The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you're in bed.

So - -
Keep a picture in your pocket
And a poem in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.

Do you have books overdue? So does George Washington!

Yes, it's true, even George Washington was a little late returning his library books, too!

As a reminder, all books from the Roeper Library Media Center must be returned by Monday, May 24, 2010. Families are responsible for the replacement cost for any books that aren't returned.

A Parent-Child Reading Challenge

Did you see this fabulous article in the New York Times this weekend?

Many parents read with their children on a daily basis but I particularly enjoyed the deliberateness of "The Streak" and how important it became to both parent and child.

Will you start "The Streak" with your child(ren)?

What's New in the Library Media Center?

We've been busy with books and technology alike! Stage I children enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Dr. Seuss' 106th birthday orchestrated by Colleen; I loved the opporunity to share a few of my favorite Seuss stories with the children with my friends, the Lorax and the Cat in the Hat! In Stage II, we just finished exploring Aesop's fables including Jerry Pinkney's 2010 Caldecott Medal winner, The Lion and the Mouse, a wordless book with remarkable illustrations. Children in Stages III and IV have been mesmerized by Jon Sciezka's The Exquisite Corpse Adventure, a wacky tale told by a variety of children's authors that can be found online at http://read.gov/. With much suspense, we're reading our way through the adventure that's released one chapter every two weeks.

In other news, children all over the Lower School have started podcasting! Students in Stages I through IV are using this digital recording technology to listen to themselves read aloud, record their own pieces of creative writing, and report their research findings and new knowledge. Wondering how you can listen to what the Roeper Podcasters have been up to? Check out http://roeperls.podbean.com/ (link to the right) and subscribe to the RoeperLS Podcasting RSS feed.
